What does a Second Lieutenant actually do?
I know it varies based on his job description and his branch, but let's assume he's assigned as a platoon leader for a combat branch. What does he really do?
I've heard from other sources that he focuses on the mission planning with guidance from the company commander, while the platoon sergeant does all the nitty gritty things involving the soldiers, but what do you really do?
If there's a raid on a house, does the 2nd LT. lead the assault personally, in front, or does he stand by the fence and give commands?
For part of a deployment I was on I was attached to a scout platoon with a BCT in 10th Mountain Div. The 2LT for that unit did the following:
1. Briefed the mission before we went out (where going, what doing, who doing what, other units in the area, comms) Army calls this the Operations Order (OPORD).
2. Was in charge of the convoy, as such was the person all the trucks called into to give him ready status, report anything unusual.
3. Took the lead in talking to the local police, politicians, tribal sheiks and whatnot.
4. He was the rater for the Platoon Sergeant's NCOER, but that's paperwork you don't really need to worry about for the purposes of your question.
